Meet Real Madrid's 23 managers since 1992


Rafa Benitez has been dismissed by Real Madrid after a tempestuous time in charge of the club which was plagued by leaks of player unrest and fan disapproval.
But in spite of his problems, the ex-Liverpool manager leaves having won 17 of his 25 competitive matches in charge of the side, and with Real in third position in La Liga with 37 points from 18 games - just four off table-toppers Atletico Madrid.
He has become Real's 23rd managerial casualty since the Champions League's inception at the start of the 1992-1993 season; let's takes a look through the former bosses and their records at the Bernabeu outfit's helm.

Benito Floro 
Nationality: Spain 
Reign: July 1, 1992 - March 7, 1994
Win percentage: 56.52% 
Honours: Copa del Rey (1), Spanish Super Cup (1)
Gijon-born Floro won two cups with Real Madrid in nearly two seasons having joined from Albacete - the club he returned to after leaving the Bernabeu.

Vicente del Bosque 
Nationality: Spain 
Reign: March 7, 1994 - June 30, 1994
Win percentage: 45.45% 
Del Bosque won five, lost five and drew one of his 11 games during his brief first spell in charge of Real. 


Jorge Valdano 
Nationality: Argentina 
Reign: July 1, 1994 - January 21, 1996
Win percentage: 50.00%
Honours: La Liga (1)
Valdano began his managerial career as Real's youth team coach before taking charge of Tenerife; he then became Los Blancos' first team coach in the summer of 1994.

Vicente del Bosque

Reign: January 21, 1996 -  January 24, 1996 
Win percentage: 100.00%
Now-65-year-old Spain manager Del Bosque played one, won one in a three-day interim role.

Arsenio Iglesias 
Nationality: Spain 
Reign: January 24, 1996 - May 29, 1996 
Win percentage: 52.38%
After four spells as Deportivo La Coruna boss, Iglesias took over at Real in 1996; his next managerial role came nine years later at Galicia. 

Fabio Capello 
Nationality: Italy 
Reign: July 1, 1996 - June 24, 1997 
Win percentage: 64.58% 
Honours: La Liga (1)
Former England boss Capello won La Liga before leaving after one season in a fruitful first spell at Real.

Jupp Heynckes 
Nationality: Germany 
Reign: June 25, 1997 - May 28, 1998
Win percentage: 49.06% 
Honours: Spanish Super Cup (1), Champions League (1)
German coach Heynckes took over in 1997 after leaving Tenerife and won the Champions League; he then joined Benfica in 1999 and went on to win the Champions League with Bayern Munich. 

Jose Antonio Camacho 
Nationality: Spain 
Reign: June 17, 1998 - July 9, 1998 
In the summer of 1998 Camacho took charge of Real, but left after only 22 days over disagreements with the club's management.

Guus Hiddink 
Nationality: Holland
Reign: July 15, 1998 - February 23, 1999
Win percentage: 55.88% 
Honours: Intercontinental Cup (1)
Current Chelsea interim boss Hiddink won 19 of the 34 games he took charge of and helped the club win the Intercontinental Cup.

John Toshack 
Nationality: Wales 
Reign: February 24, 1999 - November 17, 1999 
Win percentage: 51.35%
Having left his first managerial tenure at Real in 1990, the Welshman returned as boss in 1999 but departed after 37 games.

Vicente del Bosque

Win percentage: 54.51% 
Honours: La Liga (2), Spanish Super Cup (1), Champions League (2), Super Cup (1), Intercontinental Cup (1)
Del Bosque took control of the team once again but this time stayed for a lot longer; he managed 233 games and won seven trophies in a decorated spell.

Carlos Queiroz

Reign: June 25, 2003 - May 24, 2004 
Win percentage: 57.63% 
Honours: Spanish Super Cup (1)
Queiroz arrived a week after David Beckham joined the club and managed for one season, winning the Spanish Super Cup.

Jose Antonio Camacho 
Nationality: Spain 
Reign: May 25, 2004 - September 20, 2004 
Win percentage: 66.67%
After Queiroz's departure Camacho managed six games, in which he won four and lost two. 

Mariano Garcia Remon 
Nationality: Spain 
Reign: September 20, 2004 - December 30, 2004 
Win percentage: 60.00%
Remon was the next man to take care of Real's Galacticos but was only there for three months, managing 20 matches.

Vanderlei Luxemburgo 
Nationality: Brazil 
Reign: December 30, 2004 - December 4, 2005 
Win percentage: 62.22%
Luxemburgo led Real to seven consecutive league wins, putting them back in the title race but ended up losing it by four points to arch-rivals Barcelona.

Juan Ramon Lopez Caro 
Nationality: Spain 
Reign: December 4, 2005 - June 1, 2006
Win percentage: 50.00%
Caro stepped up from the Real Madrid B team to manage the first team proper; his first game was a 2–1 Champions League away loss to Olympiacos.

Fabio Capello 
Nationality: Italy 
Reign: July 5, 2006 - June 28, 2007 
Win percentage: 56.00%
Honours: La Liga (1)
Capello joined the club once more after leaving Juventus; he famously won La Liga in 2007 - Beckham's only Spanish league title.


Bernd Schuster 
Nationality: Germany 
Reign: July 9, 2007 - December 9, 2008 
Win percentage: 58.67%
Honours: La Liga (1), Spanish Super Cup (1)
Augsburg-born Schuster was the next man in charge having finished his post at Getafe; he won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup after 75 games at the helm. 

Juande Ramos 
Nationality: Spain 
Reign: December 9, 2008 - June 1, 2009 
Win percentage: 66.67%
Ex-Tottenham Hotspur manager Ramos won 18 of his 27 matches in his six month spell in the role.

Manuel Pellegrini 
Nationality: Chile
Reign: June 2, 2009 - May 26, 2010 
Win percentage: 75.00%
Current Manchester City manager Pellegrini was victorious in 36 of his 48 matches but was at the club less than a year before joining Malaga.

Jose Mourinho 
Nationality: Portugal 
Reign: May 28, 2010 - June 1, 2013 
Win percentage: 71.91%
Honours: La Liga (1), Copa del Rey (1), Spanish Super Cup (1)
Mourinho won three trophies during his three seasons at Real - he joined having won the Champions League with Inter Milan.    

Carlo Ancelotti 
Nationality: Italy 
Reign: June 25, 2013 - May 25, 2015 
Win percentage: 74.79%
Honours: Copa del Rey (1), Champions League (1), Super Cup (1), Club World Cup (1)
Ancelotti replaced Mourinho and enjoyed a successful two-season spell, in which he won the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid in Lisbon.


Rafa Benitez 
Nationality: Spain 
Reign: June 3, 2015 - January 4, 2016
Win percentage: 68%
Benitez's time in charge was overshadowed by rumours of player discontent and he left having won 17 of his 25 games at the helm.


I felt bad after hearing of Rafa's sacking last night, but I've seen here that people did much better jobs than him and still got the sack. So what does it really take to keep your job at Real Madrid? Because winning simply isn't enough.
