Something peculiar happened before Thursday’s Europa League match between Sporting Braga and Olympique de Marseille in Stade Velodrome: someone stole their boots!
According to the Portuguese club, 23 pairs of shoes were stolen from Braga’s dressing room the night before the game took place. Suspiciously, security cameras in the Stadium were also turned off, making any identification of the culprits impossible.
Harsh, but you’d think this is no big deal, right? Just hit your local soccer store and purchase some cleats? Well: it’s not that easy. Given that most players have sponsorship deals, they can only wear a certain type of shoe.
Fortunately, Marseille came to the rescue, supplying their opponents with shoes out of their personal stock. But even with new shoes, Braga were unable to come out of Marseille with a win, as OM held on to a 1-0 victory over the Portuguese club.
